If you love to cook at home like me, you may have heard of the over the range microwave oven. When I first heard of it, I didn’t really understand what it was or what the big deal was. But I was curious, so I did a little research into over the range microwave units, to determine whether this type of microwave oven was suitable for me.
Benefits of an over-the-range microwave oven
When researching these units, I discovered that there were quite a few benefits to switching to an over range model over a standard countertop microwave. The main benefit was the amount of space it saves. It may not seem like much to you now, but if you are used to having a large countertop model hogging up your entire counter space, switching to an over the range microwave is very desirable. Think of how much easier it would be to prepare foods on your counter, without that huge appliance getting in the way.
The over the range microwave works as a range hood as well as a microwave. So you have your microwave, your range light and range fans all in the one appliance. This can save on the costs of buying a range hood also, if it’s being installed into a new kitchen. Another benefit to over range models is the convenience. Imagine cooking a pot on your stove and having your microwave right there on top of the stove to defrost your veggies before you cook them, or to cook sides or gravy as you cook the rest of your meal on your stove or in your regular oven.
Are there any downsides?
Over the range microwave ovens do not come without some downsides however, but this does vary greatly from person to person. Depending on your height you may find the over range model to be uncomfortable to use and have trouble getting items in and out of the oven. If you are quite short, you may have to lift hot meals over your head when taking it out of the microwave. This is especially a concern if kids plan on using it. And it may seem like this model is perfect for the taller person, but it can obstruct a tall person’s view of dishes cooking on your back hotplate.
Switching to an over-the-range microwave oven can make the world of difference in your kitchen, giving you the space to prepare more meals on your counter and double as a range hood. You need to weigh up both the benefits and negatives to decide whether a model like this is a good choice for you.
