Buying a Microwave Oven – 3 Choices To Make

Microwave ovens allow you to cook and heat and even defrost foods very quickly, and they are an extremely handy appliance to have in one’s kitchen.  But is there much of a difference between the microwave ovens available today?  If you are shopping for a new microwave oven you will suddenly find yourself overwhelmed with many options, styles and features.  To choose a model that is perfect for you and your kitchen you need to know what options you have so you make the right decision.  Once you know what you are looking for, choosing the right microwave oven is not a difficult task.

3 Things to Look for Buying a Microwave Oven

There are three main points to consider when buying a microwave oven: style, size and function.  Finding a microwave model which has all these three points catering to your needs will ensure you are satisfied with your microwave and will get the most use out of it.

The style of microwave oven you choose will depend on where it is going to be in your kitchen.  The basic options are the built in model, the countertop model and the over the range model.  Built in microwaves are ones that can be built into your cabinets and end up looking like they are part of the kitchen, like a built in oven and grill would look.  These can be quite expensive, but it is possible to achieve the same look for a lower cost by purchasing a countertop model which has a built-in trim kit.  This will allow you to build in the countertop model into your cabinets and the results look almost the same.

Buying a Microwave Tips - Size

Make sure you have enough space on your kitchen counter for the microwave you are looking at.

The next option is the countertop microwave oven.  This is the most common and most popular style of microwave.  It comes in many different sizes ranging from very small and compact to very large.  This model is designed to fit comfortably on a kitchen counter or specially designed microwave shelf.  These range in price depending on size and features but can cost as little as $50 for small to as much as $250 for large, and up to $500 if you go for the convection feature.

A third style to consider when purchasing a new microwave for your kitchen is the over-the-range microwave model.  This is an interesting option as it can be used as both a range and a microwave.  These are designed to go above your stove and look like a built in microwave.

The size of microwave oven you choose will largely depend on the amount of space you have in your kitchen.  If opting for an over the range or built in model, the specific measurements will be very important.  For countertop models, you will also want to consider the size, especially if your kitchen counter is quite small or you already have a lot of appliances on it.  Another thing to consider is the size of the dishes you want to be able to fit inside your microwave oven.  Those wanting to cook and heat up large casseroles, pizzas or defrost a large item will want to choose a larger sized microwave which has a generous capacity.  Some are large enough to fit in large pizzas and even more than one dish at a time.  Those looking at smaller microwaves will want to make sure that the interior is large enough for what they are going to be cooking or heating in it.

Buying a Microwave Oven Tips - Function

Most microwave ovens have a few quick cooking buttons such as for popcorn, beverage, or baked potato. Choose a microwave which has quick buttons you are likely to use.

Last but certainly not least, is the function of microwave ovens.  This includes the features of the microwave and what it is able to do.  Microwaves usually come with basic functions such as cook, reheat and defrost but many microwave models these days offer so much more.  Advanced features like automatic smart cooking is extremely handy as you don’t have to figure out how long to cook something for.  The microwave figures it out for you.

Other features found can be very handy to have such as quick buttons, like add 1 minute as well as quick menu buttons, which allow you to simply press one button for what you are cooking such as popcorn or baked potato.

There is also the option of getting a microwave which also has convection cooking, although these are generally a bit more expensive, many find them to be well worth the cost, as they bake and brown foods like you would in a regular oven as well as having the functions of many top of the line microwave ovens.  It is a good idea to ask yourself what you want to be able to cook in your microwave and is it able to perform this task and does it perform it well.

When shopping for a new microwave and going through all the different options it is a good idea to remember what you will be using your microwave for most and what you want it to be able to do.  Keeping in mind the three points above of style, size and function, will help you to eliminate what you don’t want and focus on the options that cater to all of your needs.  I have no doubt that you will be able to find the perfect microwave oven for you and your kitchen.
